The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park observatory and Jagger Museum. This place is where all the park geologists are headquartered and do their work from. The building was remodelled recently to now contain a small museum about volcanoes inside. This giant crater is probably the most photographed site at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It sits inside the Kilauea caldera area where this photo was taken. This giant crack runs for several miles down the western flank of Kilauea Volcano. More black lava on Kilauea Volcano. I think the last time there was an eruption here was around 1982. The long blue mountain in the distance is none other than Mauna Loa volcano, which towers 13,680 feet above the Big Island's southern region. These photo series don't do this sprawling crater much justice. The area is like about 20 miles wide and long I think. Huge. Way too much area to cover in one single shot.
